THE GENERATIVE CHANGES IN THE REMEDIAL WORLD
A trainer’s world is absolutely different from the trainee’s world, though both learn immensely in the same environment in such starkly different roles. The structure behind the workshop is rarely discussed in the training set up. I think the reason is noe other than paucity of time and the commitment to deliver what the partipants have signed up for. it is like when you visit the doctor, he asks you to get some tests done but may not necessarily convey the logic and reasoning of the same with you. Similarly, the broken down part-by-part structure is mostly not translated to the group.
Any conversation around psychological techniques and therapy have two distinct yet overlapping features to it. If it is change work that is either taught or experienced, change can have its impact by either being remedial or generative.
Remedial changes are based on a specific change that comes about. In other words, it is a “remedy” for a particular challenge being faced. Therefore, it is trageted and specific in it’s working. It “remedi-fies” only what it focuses on. There are either none or very little by-products of the change experienced.
On the other side, there are generative changes. These changes come about more as an umbrella of positive ones rather than a single change. They are usually targeted to a specific problem but the result that it brings about impacts more than that. It is like a ripple effect that gets created by dropping a pebble in the pond of still water.
A bad memory losing it’s grip over the person is a remedial change wehereas someone reporting better sleep after the session is a generative change.
Needless to say, remedial changes are easy to spot and generative ones are difficult to point out. Generative chnages increases the quality of life exponentially whereas remedial ones work on one bit at a time. Both are equally important and without realising, they are happening in tandem.
Either as a therapist, change worker, healer or the recieving client/ patient, it is a good idea to begin to consider the disticntions between two. It definitely increase overall efficiency of the entire system.
